Glass shards found on Kanwar Yatra route in Delhi, BJP alleges conspiracy

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva has raised serious concerns over the discovery of glass shards scattered along a special Kanwar Yatra track in East Delhi’s Shahdara area, calling it a potentially dangerous and deliberate attempt to disturb peace during the ongoing pilgrimage.

Speaking to mediapersons, Sachdeva said the incident occurred on Saturday night, when pieces of glass were found strewn over a 1-km stretch of the dedicated Kanwar route.

He termed the act a “well-planned conspiracy” by anti-social elements and questioned the silence of certain political parties, hinting at what he described as their “appeasement politics”. He warned that had Kanwar pilgrims been present at the time, it could have led to a serious accident or even unrest. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the route was not being used at that hour.

The Delhi Police have launched an investigation into the matter, and BJP leaders expressed confidence that those responsible would soon be identified and brought to justice. Cleanup operations were immediately carried out to clear the route, and police presence has been increased in sensitive areas.

BJP MLA Sanjay Goyal, who visited the site, said broken glass was found again around 8.45 PM on Saturday, just a day after an earlier round of cleanup. “The repeated scattering of shards confirms this was done intentionally,” Goyal said, calling for heightened vigilance and strict action.

Sachdeva commended the Delhi government, led by CM Rekha Gupta, for making better arrangements for Kanwar pilgrims this year compared to previous years. He highlighted that special tracks were being constructed across the city to ensure the smooth movement of pilgrims, and funds were being directly transferred to Kanwar committees to improve facilities.

Medical camps and safety checkpoints have also been set up along the routes. A Kanwar pilgrim confirmed the presence of glass pieces on the road but said swift action was taken to clean the area, and overall, the facilities and camps set up

for devotees were

satisfactory.

The Kanwar Yatra, a sacred pilgrimage observed during the month of Sawan, sees thousands of Lord Shiva devotees walking long distances, often barefoot. The safety of pilgrims remains a top priority for authorities, especially in the face of attempts to sabotage the peaceful conduct of the yatra.
