Former DU prof, historian Meenakshi nominated to RS
Former Delhi University professor and eminent historian Meenakshi Jain has been nominated to the Rajya Sabha by President Droupadi Murmu.
Jain, who taught history at Gargi College under Delhi University (DU), is the lone nominee from Delhi this time.
Known for her extensive research on India’s cultural and religious heritage, Jain was awarded the Padma Shri in 2020 for her distinguished contribution to the field of history.
Recognising her connection with Delhi University, the university’s official account posted on X: “We congratulate Dr Meenakshi Jain, an outstanding and distinguished historian, who taught history at Gargi College, University of Delhi, on being nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the President of India. The University of Delhi is proud of Dr Meenakshi Jain.”
During her academic career at Gargi College, Jain shaped the understanding of Indian history for many students while also producing significant works such as “Flight of Deities and Rebirth of Temples”, “The Battle for Rama” and “Sati: Evangelicals, Baptist Missionaries and the Changing Colonial Discourse”.
Jain has also served as a member of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library and the Indian Council of Historical Research and is currently a Senior Fellow at the Indian Council of Social Science Research.
