After Rayagada, ‘Kangaroo Court’ Surfaces in Koraput; Couple Forced to Plough Like Bullocks

Koraput: In a shocking incident reminiscent of the recent Rayagada case, a couple in Odisha’s Koraput district was subjected to a degrading tribal ritual for marrying within the same clan, with a video of the act sparking widespread outrage on social media.
The incident took place in Peda Itigi village, Borigi panchayat under Narayanpatna block, where the couple, who had previously eloped and were living together, was yoked like bullocks and forced to plough in front of villagers, as per reports.
The public humiliation was part of a so-called “traditional purification” ritual, demanded by the girl’s family to “absolve the sin” of their union. The family had initially opposed the relationship but agreed to accept it if the couple adhered to local customs.
The viral video has raised serious concerns about caste and clan-based discrimination in Odisha’s tribal regions.
This incident follows a similar case in Rayagada’s Kalyansinghpur block just days ago, where another couple faced comparable punishment.
