Tribal elder shot dead in Pakistan’s restive northwest
PESHAWAR, July 14: A tribal elder and his driver were shot dead by unidentified assailants on Monday in Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province in a case of suspected target killing, according to the police.
The tribal leader, identified as Malik Muhammad Rehman Dawar, had survived two attempts on his life earlier, which he escaped with injuries.
Monday’s incident took place in the Tapi area of the North Waziristan district, along the Miranshah-Bannu Road, according to police officials.
Armed attackers opened indiscriminate fire, killing Dawar and his driver on the spot, and fled the scene.
Authorities are examining multiple angles in the double murder case and have vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice soon.
A thorough investigation is underway, according to the District Police Officer of North Waziristan.
Pro-government tribal elders, supporting the actions of the security forces against terrorists in the tribal regions along the 1,400 km long porous Pak-Afghan border, are frequently targeted by the terrorists in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. (PTI)
