When things turned ugly at an Australian shopping mall, bystanders showed the courage to do the right thing. Around 4:35 PM on Monday, the public at Homer Street in Moonee Ponds, near Moonee Ponds Central, witnessed two men having an argument. To their shock, one of them brought out a knife and attacked the other—leaving the victim with stab wounds on his neck and chest.
Australian media reports said that the bystanders not only alerted the police but ensured that the perpetrator did not get away from the crime scene. They kept him restrained until a police unit arrived at the scene and arrested him. The stabbed individual was shifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, where his injuries were found to be not life-threatening, 7 News said in a report.
Moonee Ponds, also known for Queens Park and the Moonee Valley Racecourse, is located approximately 7 kilometres north-west of Melbourne's Central Business District (CBD), within the City of Moonee Valley local government area.
The citizen's arrest meant people overpowering and pinning the man to the ground until the first responders arrived. He reacted by repeatedly yelling religious slogans. A citizen's arrest is when a civilian, someone who is not a sworn law enforcement officer, detains another person they believe has committed a crime.
While it was immediately unknown what led to the altercation between the two in the shopping zone in northwest Melbourne, bystanders reportedly told 7 News that the man was heard screaming “Allahu Akbar” while being taken away by the cops.
The identities of the two people involved were not revealed by the Victoria Police during the time of compiling this report.
