Farah Khan Says Bollywood 'Celebrated' Tees Maar Khan's Failure In 2010, Reveals People Said 'Abhi Aayi Na Line Par'
Filmmaker‑choreographer Farah Khan has revisited the decade‑old box‑office debacle of her 2010 comedy Tees Maar Khan, revealing that several people of Bollywood openly rejoiced when the film under‑performed at the box office.
Speaking in her latest YouTube vlog, shot at the Mumbai home of Jackky Bhagnani and Rakul Preet Singh, the director sat down with the actor-producer and her long‑time cook Dilip to swap industry war stories.
Farah recalls backlash after Tees Maar Khan release
The conversation soon turned to professional setbacks and that is when Farah recalled the backlash that followed after the release of Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif-starrer Tees Maar Khan in 2010.
Farah said, "In our industry, more than being happy for your success, people are happy for other people's failure. I remember during Tees Maar Khan release, there was literally a celebration in the film industry. People who I have worked with were like, 'Abhi aayi na line par'. Tees Maar Khan is a legend among the GenZ, they don't care about my other films. Karenge, banayenge, aur badi banayenge."
The director added that the film's newfound cult following among younger viewers has softened the sting of its initial reception.
Jackky recalls father's struggling days
Jackky, whose family banner Pooja Entertainment recently took a hit with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, empathised with Farah and recalled his father and veteran producer Vashu Bhagnani's early years hustling on Mumbai pavements.
"Our training comes from him only. Footpath par saree bechte the. I wasn’t born at that time. But in front of me also, the same thing happened during Om Jai Jagdish. I have seen him going from zero to 'Chalo saath mein milke banate hain' 3‑4 times," he said.
Farah praised the Bhagnani family's perseverance, and stated that repeated failures can 'destroy' careers but can also reset creative grit.
Tees Maar Khan failure
Tees Maar Khan, directed by Farah and starring Akshay and Katrina, was a high-energy heist comedy that generated immense buzz before release but failed to impress at the box office.
Though panned by critics and audiences at the time, the film has since gained a cult following among Gen Z viewers, known for its quirky humour and stylised songs, including Sheila Ki Jawaani.
