IPL Update: Varun Aaron joins Sunrisers Hyderabad as bowling coach

In a major development, Sunrisers Hyderabad have announced former India pacer Varun Aaron as their bowling coach from the next season onwards. SRH took to the social media platform X to make the announcement with more details about the role and contract expected in due course. After a playing career that lasted for more than a decade, this will be Aaron's first stint in the coaching domain.

The Sunrisers handle on X put up a picture of Aaron with a caption on the image that read 'Welcome, Varun Aaron, bowling coach!'.

The 35-year-old, once known for his express pace, played nine Tests and as many ODIs for India with his last international game coming in the Bengaluru Test against South Africa in 2015, a game that only had a day's play as rain played havoc on the other four days. Aaron, however, was an effective bowler in domestic cricket, particularly in white-ball cricket where his pace became his ally.

However, it was in Tests that the Indian team management expected Aaron to succeed, backing him particularly in overseas tours where he had underwhelming returns with injuries also wrecking his fortunes. In the IPL, the story was similar with Aaron playing 52 games across five franchises - DC, RCB, PBKS, RR and GT with the 2022 season for the Titans being his last season, albeit mostly on the fringes. Recently, Aaron has spent a lot of time as television commentator.

Aaron will replace New Zealand's James Franklin who had been in the role previously. The latest update from the SRH camp is that the Kiwi shall continue with the franchise in another capacity while Aaron takes over the duties as bowling coach. SRH finished sixth in the points table of IPL 2025, a disappointing campaign for the side that finished runners-up in 2024.
