Apple To Begin Manufacturing iPhone 17 Simultaneously In India & China: Here’s Why It Matters

Apple is reportedly preparing to manufacture its upcoming iPhone 17 models in both India and China at the same time. According to a report by Moneycontrol, the production in India will be led by Foxconn, Apple’s key supplier, at its Sriperumbudur facility in Tamil Nadu.

The Cupertino giant is set to introduce the iPhone 17 series in September this year.

This move marks the first time Apple has ever aligned its India production schedule with China’s for a new iPhone launch. It reflects a broader strategy to reduce reliance on a single country for manufacturing, diversify its global supply chain, and leverage India’s improving manufacturing ecosystem. Over the past few years, Apple has gradually expanded its presence in India, assembling older models locally and investing in infrastructure and supplier relationships.

India’s Production Timeline Catches Up

Foxconn has already started trial production of the iPhone 17 at its Tamil Nadu plant. Components are currently being imported to support the early stages of the manufacturing process. If timelines remain on track, full-scale production is expected to begin in August, well ahead of the phone’s global release.

Until now, India’s iPhone manufacturing typically lagged behind China by several weeks or months. By closing that gap, Apple is positioning itself to deliver faster rollouts and more supply-side flexibility during launch season.

India’s growing significance in Apple’s global operations is becoming increasingly evident. The company already assembles a number of models in India, including the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, and iPhone 15. But bringing India into the fold at the same stage as China for a brand-new model signals a new level of trust in local manufacturing capabilities.
