In 'Maareesan', Fahadh Faasil returns to familiar territory, reuniting with 'Maamannan' co-star Vadivelu

Fahadh Faasil may be returning to familiar territory in his upcoming Maareesan, co-starring Vadivelu, with whom he worked in Mari Selvaraj's Maamannan. The former plays a thief trying to rob some money off of Vadivelu's character, a middle-aged man.
The film's newly released trailer hints at a different kind of road movie, with Fahadh's characterisation evoking the grey-shaded 'ordinary man' characters he played in Malayalam, most notably Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum, Njan Prakashan, and Carbon. The film is slated for a July 25 release.
Interestingly, director Sudheesh Shankar and Fahadh were supposed to do another film with the same banner, R.B. Chaudhary's Super Good Films, titled Hanuman Gear, but the film was stalled due to unforeseen circumstances. However, the project hasn't been dropped, according to a report in OTTPlay. Sudheesh revealed that they decided to do Maareesan first because Hanuman Gear involves heavy VFX work.
Maareesan is expected to give us a different, serious side of Vadivelu after Maamannan. The actor, who is one of the most-celebrated and meme-friendly comedians in Tamil cinema, impressed everyone with a hitherto unseen performance in Maamannan. It's the kind of transformation that we have seen in other South Indian actors associated with comedy, such as the late Vivek from Tamil cinema, and Suraj Venjaramoodu, Salim Kumar, Indrans, and Harishree Ashokan from Malayalam cinema.
Unlike Maamannan, Maareesan is expected to be a relatively light-hearted entertainer with humorous elements. However, it's not being touted as an out-and-out comedy, evident from the footage presented in the latest trailer. The makers have also kept some surprises under wraps, opting to instead let audiences find out when the film arrives on the big screen.
