BJD Announces Candlelight Vigil, to Gherao Lok Seva Bhawan Over FM College Student’s Death

Bhubaneswar: Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has announced a candlelight vigil this evening and a gherao of Lok Seva Bhawan on July 16 to protest the death of Soumyashree Bisi, a 20-year-old B.Ed student at Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) College in Balasore, who succumbed to severe burn injuries on July 14 following an alleged self-immolation attempt.
Senior BJD leader Debi Prasad Mishra has demanded a judicial inquiry by a sitting High Court judge into the incident.
The party has also called for the resignation of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, holding them morally responsible for the circumstances leading to the student’s death.
It is pertinent here to mention that Bisi set herself ablaze after pouring petrol on herself in front of the principal’s chamber on Saturday over alleged sexual harassment by the HoD of her discipline, Samir Kumar Sahu.
The student with over 90 per cent burn injuries was rushed to Balasore Medical College, but was later shifted to AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, for advanced treatment.
Prior to the self-immolation bid, the student had staged a sit-in protest near the college campus demanding action against the accused HoD Sahu for the alleged misbehaviour.
She was very upset as no action was taken against the HoD by the college authorities despite her lodging a formal complaint against the accused Sahu.
