Actor Dheeraj Kumar passes away at 80 after pneumonia battle

Veteran actor Dheeraj Kumar, best known for his contributions to Hindi and Punjabi cinema, passed away on Tuesday. The actor had been suffering from pneumonia and was admitted at Kokilaben Hospital in Andheri West when he breathed his last, with his son present by his bedside, The Hindu reported. He was 80.

His family said in a statement, "With heartfelt sorrow, we announce the passing of veteran actor, producer and Director and beloved human being Dheeraj Kumar on Tuesday, 15th July 2025, around 12 noon, surrounded by family... He was always laughing, always giving, and always present to his family, friends, and the industry at large. A true gentleman, he was a father figure, friend, and guide to many. He will be remembered not just as an actor, but as a mentor, a gentle soul, and a true gentleman. We thank everyone for their prayers and support during this time.”

According to PTI, Kumar's close associate and family friend Ajay Shukla said that his last rites will be held at Pawan Hans Crematorium on Wednesday.

Kumar made his first mark in the film industry when he appeared as one of the finalists in a talent show organized by the United Producers and Filmfare, where Rajesh Khanna emerged victorious.

Kumar became a familiar face on the silver screen during the 1970s and 80s, making his debut in the Hindi film Raaton Ka Raja. He was featured in a supporting role in the film Sharafat Chhod Di Main Ne, starring Firoz Khan and Hema Malini. His other notable films include Roti Kapda Aur Makan, Maang Bharo Sajana, Kranti, and Bepanaah.

The actor also dabbled in production, co-founding the banner Creative Eye Limited with his wife. The production house mostly catered to television shows, including religious series like Om Namah Shivay, Shree Ganesh, and Om Namo Narayan. The company also bankrolled Ishq Aaj Kal, a web series available on Zee5.

According to reports, Dheeraj Kumar is survived by his wife, Zubi Kochhar and his son, Ashutosh.
