Hope for Nimisha Priya: Yemen delays execution amidst ongoing negotiations to save Kerala nurse

Authorities in Yemen have postponed the execution of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, convicted of murdering Yemeni citizen Talal Abdo Mehdi, and multipronged efforts are reportedly underway to save her.
According to sources, the execution scheduled for july 16 has been postponed and talks are being held with Mehdi's family to secure her release by offering blood money. Indian government officials said they have been in regular talks with Yemen authorities and are rendering all possible assistance in the matter to secure Priya's release.
"Despite the sensitivities involved, Indian officials have been in regular touch with the local jail authorities and the prosecutor's office, leading to securing this postponement", sources in the know of the developments told The Week.
The development comes amid reports of Sunni Muslim leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar leading talks to secure Priya's release. According to PTI, a meeting between representatives of prominent scholar and Sufi leader Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz, and the family of Talal Abdo Mahdi is expected to be held at Dhamar on Tuesday.
According to reports, Mehdi's family agreed to the talks following the advice of Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz. "Today's discussion is focused on reaching a final decision regarding the acceptance of blood money. As efforts continue to convince the family, Kanthapuram has also requested the Yemeni authorities to temporarily defer the execution scheduled for July 16 --a request the Yemeni administration is expected to consider today," a source in the know of developments told the publication.
