Tesla, the Elon Musk-promoted electric car company, has finally entered India. The US-based company on Tuesday opened its first showroom or experience centre, as it calls it, in Mumbai's Bandra Kurla Complex business district. Following Mumbai, Tesla also plans to open its experience centre in Delhi.
The Model Y will be the first car that Tesla is driving into India. It will be available in two variants—rear-wheel drive with a WLTP (worldwide harmonised light vehicles test procedure) range of 500 km and long-range, which has a WLTP range of 622 km.
The base Tesla Model Y will cost ₹59.89 lakh, while the long-range model will set you back by ₹67.89 lakh. Registrations will be possible in Mumbai, Delhi and Gurugram. The car can also be booked on Tesla's website.
Deliveries are expected to begin in the current July-September quarter for the rear-wheel drive model, while the long-range variant will be delivered from the October-December quarter this year.
The Model Y has a top speed of 201 km per hour and can accelerate from 0-100 in 5.9 seconds (5.6 seconds for the long-range).
Along with the car, Tesla will also bring in its charging infrastructure to India.
"One of the reasons we are very successful, we are the leading technology vendor in the EV space, is not only the vehicle technology, but also the charging technology. Charging is a crucial part of EV ownership," pointed out Isabel Fan, regional director, Tesla.
Globally, Tesla has a network of over 7,000 charging stations with 70,000 superchargers.
It will set up four charging stations in Mumbai (BKC, Lower Parel, Thane and Navi Mumbai), which will have 16 superchargers. It will also open 16 destination chargers (at commercial spaces, hotels, etc). Similarly, it plans to set up a network of 4 superchargers and 15 destination chargers in Delhi, explained Fan.
People who purchase a Model Y will also get a free fall charger to charge at home, she added.
"We will build and set up after-sales service locations in Mumbai and Delhi. Delivery, workplaces, and logistics are the areas in the short term we will definitely invest in and implement to support the Tesla community," Fan added.
In India, EV sales are slowly growing, but electric passenger vehicles still account for a fraction of total PV sales.
According to the Federation of Auto Dealers Association (FADA), 41.53 lakh PVs were sold in the 2024-2025 financial year. Electric passenger vehicles penetration was at 2.6 per cent, up from 2.3 per cent in 2023-24.
The total EV penetration in India stood at 7.8 per cent last year, up from 7.1 per cent in the previous year.
Tesla Model Y will, for now, be fully imported from Shanghai. With the import duties, the EV certainly doesn't come cheap. But the brand is sure to attract more customers, especially the well-heeled and the enthusiasts.
