EPL transfers: Liverpool makes official contact with Newcastle United for Alexander Isak

Liverpool continue to be the showstoppers of this year's summer transfer window as they continue to look for options to add to their already starry roster for the upcoming season.
The latest update from the Reds camp is that they have officially made their first direct contact with Newcastle United regarding the signing of striker Alexander Isak. According to noted football analyst and transfers tracker Fabrizio Romano, the EPL Champions have initiated their first round of talks with Newcastle United on Tuesday (July 15). It is understood that a potential record bid is in the offing for Isak, should a consensus be arrived at.
The twist in this story is that Newcastle United had never claimed to have Isak for sale at any point. This, however, was also due to the fact that the prolific striker had been seemingly satisfied with the environment at the club all along. It now remains to be seen whether Newcastle are willing to change their stance or offer a new deal to Isak. For Liverpool, this is also a step forward to gain clarity regarding Isak as he had been on their priority list for long without any certainty in the signing.
Should the Isak move not work out, Liverpool are reportedly aiming to target Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Etikite who has other interested clubs in the race as well. Newcastle are eyeing Etikite for now, if Isak leaves for Liverpool but the German club has already expressed their displeasure over the initial €80m bid placed by Newcastle. Eintracht Frankfurt feel that Etikite is worth a lot more and are hoping for the same.
This three-way transfer saga should get a closure soon once Isak's future gets decided. He had a fantastic 2024-25 season where he netted 27 goals and provided six assists from 42 appearances for Newcastle United.
