Rohit Sharma And Virat Kohli's Retirement Clarified By BCCI - ODI Future Update

Team India’s star cricketers Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have officially retired from Test cricket, having earlier stepped away from the T20 format after the T20 World Cup 2024.

With both formats behind them, speculation around their future in ODI cricket has intensified.

Rumors about their retirement from 50-over matches have surfaced from time to time, fueling debates among fans and experts. However, the BCCI has now made its position clear on the matter with an official statement.

“I want to make it very clear, once and for all," Shukla told reporters on the sidelines of India men and women’s teams meet with Engand monarch King Charles III.

“We all feel Rohit and Virat’s absence, but they made the decision on their own. It’s the BCCI’s policy that they don’t tell any player when they should take retirement from which format. That’s on the players. It was their decision. We’ll always feel their absence and consider them as batting greats. The good thing is they are available for ODIs," he added.

ODI Series Might Take Place in August

India was originally scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in August, which would have marked the return of both veterans.

However, the series has now been postponed until next year. In the meantime, reports suggest that Sri Lanka has shown interest in hosting India for a three-match ODI series in the same period. While there is no official confirmation from the BCCI yet, fans are excited about the possibility of seeing Rohit and Virat return to action.

Their continued availability in ODIs is a big boost for India, especially as the team begins to plan for the next 50-over World Cup cycle.
