Lenses Up, Shutters Open With Crafting Your Own Mumbai Photowalk Story

India is home to the mesmerizing city of Mumbai, located on the country’s west coast. If you enjoy history, culture, and geography, and love photography, this will be a photographer’s paradise. The beauty of Mumbai fuels one’s creativity, whether you are a beginner or an experienced photographer. In this post, I have built a DIY guide for photography lovers on capturing every bit of beauty with a camera while wandering around Mumbai.

1. Gateway Of India

The Gateway of India is a stunning monument and one of Mumbai’s central tourist attractions. Built in 1924 to mark the arrival of King George V and Queen Mary to India, it serves as a focal point for celebrating the city’s beauty. As a photographer, this archway is something you don’t want to miss.

Why this place?

You can take photos with the Gateway in a well centered frame and will also have a beautiful juxtaposing structure in the background. It would serve as a beautiful foreground, accompanied by the colonial-era structure alongside the contemporary architecture. On top of this, boats frequently visit the area, providing the perfect topping to the photograph.

2. Marine Drive

The “Queen’s Necklace”, another nickname for Marine Drive, is located in South Mumbai and encircles the coastline, providing wonderful views of the Arabian Sea. This palm lined walkway serves as an ideal location for capturing picturesque photos.

Why this place?

In addition to the breathtaking views of the city and the sea, Marine Drive provides a stunning angle of the road’s curves. The area is especially well known for its golden hour, which is a magical time when light illuminates the city.

3. Chor Bazaar

Chor Bazaar is renowned for being Mumbai’s favorite Thieves Market, making it one of the best locations for street photographers wishing to explore the spirit of local culture in Mumbai’s lively marketplaces.

Why this place?

The market is filled with energy with its chaotic nature, vintage items, traditional street sellers, and narrow alleyways. The market’s antique goods which are displayed at the stalls make for great shots of the city’s heritage.

4. Dhobi Ghat

If you want to capture a shot of Mumbai that sets it apart from the rest, the Dhobi Ghat, the world’s largest outdoor laundry, will do the job just right. It is a window into the workings of Mumbai’s middle class which is ideal for photographers.

Why this place?

The juxtaposition of the rows upon rows of clothing hanging against the city’s high-rise buildings is a sight to behold. The scale of the laundry is of astonishing interest to any onlooker.

5. Colaba Causeway

Colaba is a busy life filled shopping street, which makes it an interesting place for photographs. Apart from the street vendors and the crowd during the day, the colonial buildings provide a superb backdrop too.

Why this place?

Colaba’s blend of architecture and its street exudes life. The lively street signage paired with the quaint buildings and daily commotion makes it ideal for capture.

6. Siddhivinayak Temple

This temple, dedicated to Lord Ganesha, is the most well-known Hindu Temple in Mumbai. It also adds a different shade to this ever-busy city. The architectural elegance of the temple and the large gathering around it makes it increasingly popular among photographers.

Why this place?

The fine details and carvings on the temple, combined with the hustle of devotees give numerous opportunities for great photographs. You are able to capture the fusion of religions and cultures that characterize Mumbai’s history.

7. Bandra-Worli Sea Link

People who are looking for a great city landscape picture should visit the Bandra-Worli Sea Link because it offers an unparalleled view of Mumbai, with the sea link bridge in view.

Why this place?

The way the bridge is built along with the Arabian sea and Mumbai’s skyline serves as a great combination, believe it or not, it’s best viewed during sunset or at night

8. Elephanta Caves

If you are looking for something more towards history, you can take a ferry to Elephanta Island where you can see temples carved in the rocks. There are many places to take photographs, especially with the magnificent sculptures and incredible views that are perfect for a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Why this place?

The combination of the splendid architecture of the caves and the natural beauty of the island creates an incredible scene. Do not forget to shoot a wide-angle view of the rock-cut temples and close-ups of the figures.

Final Thoughts

From the ancient historical places, the vibrant bustling markets, to the beautiful coastal scenery, there are plenty of Mumbai photography options. No matter what the subject might be, capturing light is the most critical part of this fast moving city. Be it comprehensive journalism or street photography, a curious mind and some level of patience is needed to grab the essences of moments that make up the city of Mumbai.
