A contract extension talks between Ballon d'Or runner-up Vinicius Junior and Real Madrid have stalled after the Brazilian winger demanded that the club ensured he was the highest-paid member of the squad. Despite Madrid willing to offer an excellent hike, Vinicius was not satisfied as he wanted to earn more than Kylian Mbappe in the Spanish capital, reports said.
The 25-year-old Vinicius Jr joined Madrid back in 2018 and was engaged in fresh talks with Los Blancos to extend his stay at the club until 2030. He has a couple of years left on his current contract, and the talks hitting a roadblock have forced the club to hit the pause button for now. The La Liga giants may also consider offloading the attacker if they get good offers, Spanish media reports said.

Vinicius Jr is asking Real Madrid for around €30 million, including a renewal bonus in the new deal, The Athletic said. Real Madrid are willing to pay him a considerable increase from his current salary, which is around €10 million net per season, but not more than Mbappe's €15 million, the report added.
The former Flamengo player is not at his best, having experienced a considerable dip in his form. He was nowhere near his best during the FIFA Club World Cup and was almost clueless against PSG in the semi-final that Madrid lost 4-0. During the 2024-25 season, Vinicius played 55 games across all competitions, managing 22 goals and 19 assists.

Vinicius was linked to several Saudi teams, but it was reported that he wanted to remain in Europe with the Ballon d'Or in mind. Playing at the highest level was important to keep his hopes of winning the award alive, and at Real Madrid he has a realistic hope of winning all possible titles to strengthen his claim. If things don't work out, Vini has the opportunity to leave Madrid as a free agent in a couple of years. However, Real Madrid are certain not to let that happen as they are well aware that their attacker is a golden goose who can bring in big profits if kept on the transfer market.
