INLD chief Abhay Chautala gets death threat

Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) chief and former MLA Abhay Singh Chautala reportedly received a death threat through a voice message from an unknown UK number last night.

The message, received on the numbers of his son Karan and personal staff member, warned Abhay to “remain out of their way", failing which he would meet the same fate as his “pradhan", in an obvious reference to INLD state president Nafe Singh Rathi, who was shot by assailants in Bahadurgarh in 2024.

“Karan received a WhatsApp call around 10.45 pm. The call was disconnected in 5 seconds and a threat was received through a voice message. Then, Ramesh, who handles dad’s phone, got a similar blank call, followed by a voice message," INLD MLA Arjun Chautala said.

In his complaint to the Chandigarh Police, Karan said the voice note came from a foreign number in which the unknown person threatened his father.

Abhay’s secretary was also told that the former should treat it as a “final warning", the complainant alleged.

Arjun said in 2023, too, his father had received a similar threat, after which the police registered a case. “Presently, my father has Y plus security cover. We submitted a complaint in Chandigarh late last night. However, the police did not take it seriously, until the CID, Haryana, stepped in," Arjun claimed.

He said this call would not deter them from raising security concerns ."We cannot allow this state to become a gangster state," he said.

Speaking to ‘The Tribune’, Abhay, who is in Sirsa, said, “I have been raising the issue of this growing gang culture in the state. This could be the only reason for such a message."

He said as an MLA he had raised the issue of security cover and had sought to know how many were provided security by the government. “If so many people needed security cover, what were the police doing, and how many arrests had been made. The then Home Minister Anil Vij chose to keep mum. I insisted that the officers should reply but there was no response. This is the result. The threat has reached at our doorstep," he said.

The CM had, only last week, held a meeting with the police top brass to assess the law and order situation and gave strict directions on making Haryana safe.
