Embassy Issues Warning: Visa Could Be Revoked For Crimes In The US

In the wake of the incident, the US Embassy in India issued a stern advisory for all visa holders and applicants. The message even said that minor legal infractions on American soil can also carry serious immigration consequences.

“Committing assault, theft, or burglary in the United States won’t just cause you legal issues — it could lead to your visa being revoked and make you ineligible for future US visas,” the posted on X (formerly Twitter).

This warning is particularly significant for Indian students, tourists, and professionals who often travel to the US for education, work, or leisure. The embassy pointed out that "law and order remain paramount," and failing to respect that could derail future plans to enter the country.

Why Was The Warning Issued?

The advisory follows reports that a 22-year-old Indian woman wa scaught allegedly shoplifting from a Target store while she was on vacation in the United States. According to police statements and viral footage, she spent hours inside the store, picking up goods, checking her phone, and eventually pushing her cart toward the exit without paying.

In the video, the woman appears cooperative and offers to pay for the items, seemingly unaware of the severity of the situation. “I am really sorry to bother you if it is,” she tells police. “I am not from this country. I am not going to stay here.” However, the responding officer responds sharply: “Are you allowed to steal things in India? I did not think so.”

The widely shared footage has ignited strong reactions across Indian social media, with users expressing deep frustration over how such incidents damage India’s global image and reinforce harmful stereotypes about Indian travellers abroad.
