Mumbai Rains: Water Levels In City's 7 Lakes Rise Close To 81% Amid Consistent Showers

Mumbai: The water stock in city's seven lakes has risen to nearly 81 per cent of the total required amount as per data from the Hydraulic Engineer's Department in Mumbai's Bhandup. The collective water stock of all seven lakes in city sums up to 80.96 per cent of capacity. As per the latest data released by the Hydraulic Engineer’s Department on Thursday, the combined useful water content across seven key lakes stands at 1,171,729 million litres (ML) out of a total full storage capacity of 1,447,363 ML.

Among the lakes, Modak Sagar has reached 100 per cent of its useful storage capacity with 128,925 ML and no change in level recorded in the past 24 hours. The lake started overflowing on July 9. Bhatsa, one of the largest water suppliers to the city, holds 541,559 ML of water, which is 75.53 per cent of its full storage capacity. Middle Vaitarna follows closely at 91.87 per cent, holding 177,792 ML, while Tansa is at 90.37 per cent with 131,014 ML.

Upper Vaitarna, which began releasing water on July 5, is currently at 76.42 per cent with 173,511 ML. Vihar and Tulsi, the smaller lakes located within the city limits, are also seeing rising levels with 52.58 per cent and 53.14 per cent of storage capacity filled respectively. Tulsi has collected 4,275 ML, and Vihar holds 14,563 ML.

The total rainfall recorded in the catchment areas since June is promising. Modak Sagar leads with 1,582 mm, followed by Tansa (1,551 mm), and Tulsi (1,353 mm). Bhatsa has received 1,474 mm, while Upper Vaitarna stands at 1,097 mm. Middle Vaitarna and Vihar have received 1,085 mm and 781 mm respectively.

Less Rainfall Recorded In Past 24 Hours

In the past 24 hours, however, rainfall has been subdued, with no rainfall recorded in Modak Sagar and Vihar, while Bhatsa and Tulsi received 2 mm each. The Bhandup Complex, responsible for water treatment and distribution, recorded 1 mm of rainfall today, with a total of 828 mm so far.

The cumulative water stock in Upper Vaitarna, Middle Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, and Tansa alone stands at 611,332 ML, which is 88.01 per cent of their combined capacity.

Massive Improvement In Water Levels Compared To Last Year

With more rains expected in the coming weeks, Mumbai’s water supply for the year appears to be in a comfortable position, majorly improving from last year’s levels, where total storage on the same day stood at just 34.09 per cent.
