Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro Is Here: Here's How It Wants To Change The Way You Search

Google has announced a wave of artificial intelligence upgrades for its core search engine, signalling a deeper push into generative AI. The spotlight is on the new Gemini 2.5 Pro model, which now powers Search more efficiently.

This rollout, which includes AI Overviews, a revamped Search experience and Workspace integrations, marks another chapter in Google’s shift towards AI-first products. The tech giant is betting big on Gemini’s capabilities, aiming to make everyday searches smarter, faster and more intuitive for users across the globe. Here’s what’s changing and what it means for users navigating the web in 2025.

Gemini 2.5 Pro Now Powers Search Smarter Than Ever

Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro model is now the default system running its Search Generative Experience (SGE). The new version is said to be more capable in planning, reasoning and summarisation. The company claims that this allows users to carry out more complex tasks such as trip planning or side-by-side comparisons of products, right within Search.

This rollout is part of a broader update that aims to “remove the friction” from digital exploration. The company said the model is not only more efficient but also significantly faster.

AI Overviews Begin Rolling Out Globally

AI Overviews, first introduced last year, are now expanding beyond experimental labs. Google confirmed that these summaries, which provide quick answers generated by Gemini, will be made available to users in the US this week, with plans to reach over a billion users globally by the end of the year.

According to the company, these AI-generated snippets will allow users to grasp essential information without having to click through multiple websites. Still, traditional web links will continue to play a central role in the search results.

New Gemini-Powered Tools Are Also Coming To Workspace

Beyond Search, Gemini’s capabilities are also extending into Google’s suite of productivity apps. Google Docs, Gmail and other Workspace tools will now feature AI support powered by Gemini 1.5 Pro, offering help with writing, editing and organising.

This means users will be able to perform tasks like drafting emails or summarising lengthy threads more seamlessly within the Workspace ecosystem.
