Chandigarh makes it to ‘Super Swachh League’
Chandigarh has secured a position in the Super Swachh League cities under the 3 to 10 lakh population category of the Swachh Survekshan 2024–25.
President Droupadi Murmu presented the award to Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria during a felicitation ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla, Local Government secretary Mandeep Singh Brar and MC Commissioner Amit Kumar were also present at the event.
Under the 3-10 lakh population category, the cities that have made it to the list of Super Swachh League are Noida, Chandigarh, Mysuru, Guntur, Gandhinagar and Ujjain.

The Swachh Survekshan rankings are based on various parameters, including overall cleanliness, garbage-free city star rating, open defecation-free (ODF) status, beautification drives and water plus certification.
Kataria congratulated all stakeholders — officials, field staff and citizens — for their contributions, which fetched the city the honour. He remarked, “This national recognition reflects the collective spirit and resolve of Chandigarh towards Swachhata. Let us continue this journey with the same enthusiasm and strive to make Chandigarh the cleanest city in the nation.”
The Administrator highlighted the role of Swachh Survekshan in empowering youth, creating green jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities, actively engaging self-help groups, promoting school-level interventions, encouraging source segregation start-ups and zero-waste societies and organising public awareness events aligned with the vision of Swachh Bharat.
The Administrator emphasised that sanitation and hygiene had become intrinsic to citizens’ daily lives and deeply rooted in their ‘sanskar’ (values). Swachh Survekshan, he noted, had become a powerful competitive tool inspiring cities to innovate and perform better year after year.
The Mayor expressed her gratitude to all councillors, her predecessors and the city residents for their cooperation and reaffirmed their collective commitment towards building a cleaner, greener and healthier Chandigarh. While expressing his gratitude to all former Commissioners, Amit Kumar acknowledged their significant contributions in helping the city reach the remarkable milestone in the Swachh Survekshan journey. He said the collective efforts, vision and dedication of the past leadership laid a strong foundation for sustained cleanliness and innovation in urban sanitation.
