Practice key to success, says cop after bagging 3 golds at International games

Doraha residents took out a roadshow on Thursday in honour of ASI Anmol Kaur’s (pic) stellar performance at the World Police and Fire Games, 2025, that concluded recently in the USA. Anmol bagged three gold and one bronze medals for the country at the event. In an interview with The Tribune correspondent Lovleen Bains, ASI Anmol speaks about her career, training, experiences, family.

n How have you taken the victory?

Every athlete dreams of representing their country and winning a medal, too. I got this chance and won a triple gold, so, I definitely feel on top of the world. Though it may be an exaggeration, I had my sight set on nothing but the gold, even in my dreams. And I gave it my all to win the ultimate!

n When did your sports journey begin?

Sports was my first love, I have been playing since childhood. I played each and every game, but it was in the second year of my undergraduate degree that my coach, Harinder Cheema, made me picku up the hammer and take it to the top. I further pursued this in my masters. I won various competitions in hammer throw at the university level, followed by nationals in 2023 and 2024 until I was selected to represent India at the World Police and Fire Games this year.

n How do you strike a balance between your married life, sports and work?

My life partner, Jaswinder Singh, is also a hammer thrower. He knows everything about my game, practice, diet, y health and also my wish to excel. He can sacrifice it all to see me at the top. My mother-in-law looks after my four-and-a-half-year-old child to allow me space and time to perform my duty as well as practice. Without their support, it would never have been possible.

n Would you want your child to adopt the game too?

My child feels elated seeing his mother win accolades. He visits the ground and tries to pick up the hammer and that makes him happy. But I will never pressure him into playing any sport. His interests matter more. As far as his physical fitness is concerned, I would definitely make sure he is fit one way or the other.

n Any message for the youth of Punjab?

Punjab has produced many players of international and national calibre. The state’s youth just needs a nudge in the right direction and some focus. Sports has the capacity to wipe out the drug menace entirely from our state. Rather than handing over mobiles to their children, they should take them to playgrounds.

n Anything you wish to convey to the state government?

Certainly! The youth will not show interest in sports unless they are given the right incentives at the right time. Unfortunately, there has not been a single appointment through the sports quota since 2017. Sportspersons kept waiting till they became overage and finally ended up feeling like failures.

n Your mantra of success?

As an athlete, my focus has been to immerse myself completely into my game. Practice, practice and practice….is my mantra.
