Kerala should brace for very heavy rainfall till July 21, Monday. Strong winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kilometres per hour are also possible in isolated places during these days. In the light of the development, fishing has been banned along the Kerala-Karnataka-Lakshadweep coasts until July 21.
"Heavy rainfall (7cm to 11cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12cm to 20cm in 24 hours) with extremely heavy rainfall (> 20cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at one or two places in Kerala on 18th July," the IMD website said.
A red alert has been issued in Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday, while an orange alert has been issued in Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram districts. A yellow alert has been issued in Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts.
On July 19, Saturday, a red alert has been issued for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. There is an orange alert in Ernakulam, Idukku, Thrissur and Palakkad districts and a yellow alert in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Kottayam districts, Manorama Online stated in a report.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has said that there is a possibility of waves of 3.0 to 3.1 metres high and sea erosion along the Kanyakumari coast until 8.30 pm tonight.
