Manchester United sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, says Fabrizio Romano

Bryan Mbeumo has become a Manchester United player after Brentford agreed to a £70m package for the attacker, Fabrizio Romano said on Friday evening. The left-footed winger, who often operate as a second-striker, could undergo a medical before United depart for United States on Tuesday for their pre-season tour, another report said.

"Bryan Mbeumo to Manchester United, here we go! Green light from Brentford and club to club agreement reached for £70m package, as @TheAthleticFC reports. Contract agreed weeks ago with Mbeumo as he only wanted Man United move. After Cunha, Mbeumo next for #MUFC," Fabrizio Romano said on X.

Once the deal is official, Mbeumo, who joined the Premier League side from Lorient in 2019, will become their biggest ever sale.

Ruben Amorim's team had submitted a £65m bid for Mbeumo but the Brentford camp has reportedly asked for a figure closer to the £70m mark. Romano has now confirmed this development as the Cameroon international has become the second big-budget signing at Old Trafford after the arrival of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton. United reportedly triggered his £62.5 million release clause to sign the Brazilian until June 2030, with an option for an additional year.

There were concerns over the transfer deal collapsing at the final stages despite the 25-year-old Mbeumo disagreeing to even get in touch with any other bidders. Newcastle United showing interest in Mbeumo's Brentford strike partner Yoane Wissa was said to be a body blow for the Red Devils' plans.

Sky Sports had earlier reported that Newcastle are expected to offer a deal in the £30-40m range for Wissa. If this deal does go through, it could have ramifications on Manchester United's potential deal with Bryan Mbeumo. However, United seem to have found a way through to get their man.

Manchester United had submitted their first official bid of £55 million in early June. The team's second bid worth £62.5 million was sent at the end of that month to be rejected again, BBC reported. It then became evident that the Bees were looking for £70 million for their in-form man. The team is also linked to Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez -- a target to be pursued after Mbeumo was sealed. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton is another player who is said to be on the radar of the team that is under immense pressure after having finished 15th in the English top-tier last season.
