Swachh rank fall rocks Mohali MC House meeting
A day after Mohali Municipal Corporation’s poor show in Swachh Survekshan rankings, a massive uproar was witnessed in the House meeting today with councillors slamming the Mayor and the civic body officials.
Armed with plaques, pictures, and their antics, councillors took turns to highlight the plight of their wards and rising piles of garbage.
Seated on the dais, Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu, MC Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh, Chief Engineer Naresh Batta and Senior Deputy Mayor Amrik Singh Somal had no place to hide as councillors questioned the measures for garbage disposal.
Councillors Narpinder Singh Rangi, Kuwant Singh Klaer, Jasbir Singh Manku and Ranjit Singh Bholu held plaques in their hands, demanding the removal of the Phase 11 resource management centre (RMC) point from near a residential area. They also demanded the removal of dump near the Sector 77 gurdwara.
Former Deputy Mayor Manjit Singh Sethi, Jaspreet Kaur and Baljeet Kaur also raised the issue of garbage in their areas.
Holding out her dupatta in both palms, councillor Rupinder Kaur Reena begged the MC Commissioner to address the long-pending issue of waterlogging in her ward.
Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu said, “I have instructed officials to find a solution to the garbage disposal by September 30 or RMC points where garbage is collected and segregated will be locked.”
All resolutions put up in the meeting were passed. Significant among them were a proposal to give five parks in the city to private entities for upkeep under the CSR initiatives. MC officials said they were hopeful that someone would approach them soon. Implementation of biometric attendance system in the Mohali MC office and other table agenda items were also approved.
