Parliamentary Panel reviews school education status in Ladakh

LEH, July 18: The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee (PSC) on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports held a detailed review meeting in Leh today to assess the progress of school education in the Union Territory of Ladakh.
The meeting was chaired by Digvijaya Singh, Chairman of the Committee and Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha.
The meeting focused on strengthening the education system in Ladakh, with discussions revolving around improving infrastructure, promoting local languages and culture, and ensuring better connectivity in remote areas.
Senior officials from the Ministry of Education and the Ladakh administration participated in the meeting and gave detailed presentations.
A presentation was given by A Sirja, Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Education, highlighting enrolment data, school status, infrastructure, teachers’ availability, and implementation of various central schemes such as PM POSHAN, DIKSHA, SAMAGRA Shiksha, and Vidya Samiksha Kendra.
Updates on the performance grading index and recent PARAKH survey results were also shared. Bhanu Prabha, Secretary, School Education, UT Ladakh, gave insights into local educational initiatives including winter residential coaching, PM SHRI Schools, Ladakh Education Conclave, and efforts to boost STEM education and digital learning.
Members of the Committee raised concerns about vacancies, lack of facilities in remote areas, gender gaps in school infrastructure, recruitment delays, and internet connectivity issues.
Questions were also asked about private school fees and the overall comparison with government schools.
Responding to these concerns, Chief Secretary Dr Pawan Kotwal assured the Committee of reforms in teacher recruitment, infrastructure development, and better monitoring of schemes.
He said the administration is committed to ensuring equitable access to quality education across Ladakh.
The meeting was attended by members of the PSC, senior officials from the Ministry of Education, and officers from the UT Ladakh administration.
