Drive against social evils to continue, says CM Mann

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has said that the ‘Jeevanjot’ campaign launched recently to rescue children from the clutches of beggars will go a long way in supporting drives launched against social evils, including drug abuse, crime and juvenile injustice.

Talking to The Tribune after inaugurating the Tehsil Complex at Ahmedgarh and Amargarh on Friday, the Chief Minister argued that children rescued from the clutches of beggars would join mainstream after returning to their parents or some childcare centre instead of falling prey to the sinister designs of anti-social elements.

“Having received a positive response to the campaign launched to rescue children from beggars, we have advised the personnel concerned to ensure that the rescued children are either handed over to their parents or sent to Anganwari centres or government institutes looking after orphaned children,” Mann said.

The CM appreciated that people of the state had extended the desired support to Punjab government’s ‘Yudh Nashian Virudh’ campaign launched by the Punjab Police that has since yielded encouraging results.

Acknowledging that the state was yet to be made drug-free, the Chief Minister said almost all drug peddlers and their sympathisers had since been identified and huge quantities of contraband had been seized and destroyed with the intent to break the supply chain of drugs and narcotics.

The Chief Minister called upon farmers of the region to make optimum use of canal water which has been made available by setting up an elaborate network of tributaries to check further depletion of water table. He said the state had witnessed an unprecedented rise in the use of canal water from 21 per cent in the beginning of the AAP government’s term to the present use of 63 per cent.

Elaborating on the government’s priority to provide better facilities to visitors at all government offices, the CM claimed that focus was laid on providing best available facilities to potential visitors to the Tehsil Complex at Ahmedgarh and Amargarh, constructed at a cost of Rs 6.86 crore and Rs 6.36 crore, respectively.

Both the premises, besides being spacious, will house the offices of the SDM, courtroom, Tehsildar, Naib Tehsildar, Patwar office, staff rooms, registration counters and other departments, said Mann adding that for the convenience of differently-abled persons, ramps and lifts have been installed.

Cabinet Minister Hardeep Singh Khudian, Amargarh MLA Jaswant Singh Gajjanmajra, Malerkotla MLA Mohammad Jikar ur Rahman, Municipal Council president Vikas Krishan Sharma, Waqf Board Chairman Mohammad Owais, District Planning Board Chairman Saqib Ali Khan, Market Committee Chairman Kamaljit Singh Ubhi and Hashim Soofi were present on the occasion.
