Shikaylo Gelo Ek
I recently had the pleasure of watching the Marathi play” Shikayala Gelo Ek “and it was a truly enriching experience. The storyline Education is especially important. It creates not only a wise person but a socialite out of a human race. There are two types of education. One that lets a man acquire a specific skill set with knowledge to accomplish tasks in effective ways for the wellbeing of the society.
The other is essential to fulfil the individual desires that, if ignored, create a human machine that lives by a pattern imposed upon him by society. A product machine. On the other hand, if a person gets completely obsessed with fulfilling the individual desires, he will be useless as a member of the society that fulfils its needs. The play tries to strike an equilibrium of life emphasizing the even weightage on both. Mahesh Sane is an Established educator. He is now the principal of a school in Pune.
He lives alone, as his daughter Vidya Sane, works in Mumbai and visits her father on the weekends. One day Tanaji Kharade, a member of the state legislative assembly, visits him with his bunch of party workers, with a unique offer to tutor his son, Shyam Kharade, who is not able to pass through secondary education. He has been in the tenth class for ten years and is a grown-up youth now. He is a new generation reel maker with thousands of followers and is famous on social media platforms. Tanaji’s offer is a hefty sum to educate his son to pass the board exams.
Vidya advises Mahesh to accept the offer to fulfill his dream of starting a school for underprivileged, rural children. In real time, it is Shyam who teaches Mahesh the life skills to be happy. He also helps the uncle on the ground floor to learn utility skills. In the meanwhile, Shyam also develops a liking towards school education. Shyams’ girlfriend Helen enters the plot to add confusion.
The play now goes into hilarious conflict between the two people of different classes, education, and the value of life, ending up teaching their view of life to each other, in the most amusing ways. Ending up with the fulfilment of dreams for everyone. was engaging and beautifully portrayed with a perfect balance of comedy, emotions, drama, and subtle humour.
The performances by the actors were outstanding, especially Mr. Prashant Damle, Hrishikesh Shelar, Sushil Inamdar, Chinmay Mandlekar, Anagha Bhagre, Samuddhi Moharir.
who delivered a powerful and convincing performance. The dialogues were impactful, and the sense of humour and language timing was amazing.
Sound lights and sets carry a special weightage in *Shikayla Gelo Ek* and for that Mr.kishor ingale for light, Mr. Prakash khot for sound and Mr.Madhukar baad for set should be given a clap. Mr Ajay kasurde was the key person in synchronizing these three vital departments.
Overall, Shikayala Gelo Ek is a must-watch for those who appreciate meaningful theatre. It’s a beautiful reminder of the power of live performance in Marathi culture.
