Nagpur Man Turns To Chain-Snatching To Pay ₹6,000 Alimony; Arrested Along With Jeweller

Nagpur: In a bizarre turn of events, a jobless man in Nagpur resorted to chain-snatching to meet court-mandated alimony payments to his ex-wife. The accused, Kanhaiya Narayan Baurashi, a resident of Ganpatinagar in Mankapur, was arrested by the city’s crime branch during an investigation into a recent robbery.

The case came to light after a 74-year-old woman, Jayshree Jaykumar Gade, reported the theft of her gold chain in Manishnagar on February 22. She was approached by a bike-borne snatcher who fled with her chain. A case was registered at the Beltarodi police station and a probe was launched into the matter.

Accused Resorted To Robberies To Pay Alimony

Using technical surveillance and local intelligence, the police tracked down Kanhaiya. During questioning, he confessed to the crime and revealed that he had committed at least four such robberies in recent months. He admitted that the thefts were driven by desperation, as he was required to pay Rs 6,000 in monthly alimony to his former wife as per a court order.

Kanhaiya, who has been unemployed for over two years, had remarried during the Covid-19 pandemic. With no steady source of income, he claimed to have turned to petty crimes to fulfil his legal obligations and manage household expenses.

Local Jeweller Arrested For Buying Stolen Gold

During the investigation, police discovered that some of the stolen jewellery had been sold to a local jeweller, Amardeep Krishnarao Nakhate, the owner of Shri Sai Jewellers. Nakhate was later arrested for purchasing stolen goods. Police said he failed to verify the source of the jewellery before buying it, a violation of standard protocols.

Searches conducted at various locations identified by the accused led to the recovery of a motorcycle, a mobile phone and 10 grams of gold grains, valued at approximately Rs 1.85 lakh.

Both Kanhaiya and Nakhate are now in custody and have been handed over to the Beltarodi police for further investigation. Authorities are now probing if the duo was involved in any other similar cases in the region.
