Karala rain news: Northern districts to get heavy showers today, says IMD amidst red alert

Heavy to very heavy rainfall, with the potential for extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 20cm, is very likely in one or two places in Kerala today and tomorrow (Sunday, July 20), India Meteorological Department Met Centre Thiruvananthapuram said. It is expected that the state will get more than 204.4mm of rainfall in the next 24 hours.

 

Kerala is expected to get heavy rainfall, ranging from 7cm to 11cm, and very heavy rainfall (12cm to 20cm) at one or two locations on July 21 (Monday), 24 (Thursday), and 25 (Friday), the IMD said on its official website.

 

The northern districts of Kerala should particularly brace for very heavy rainfall on Saturday, local media reports said quoting the weather agency. A red alert is sounded for five districts -- Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. An orange alert has been issued for Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad districts.

Educational institutions in Kasaragod, Kannur and Wayanad districts will remain closed on Saturday along with those in Vadakara taluk of Kozhikode district, Manorama Online said in a report.

 

Heavy rainfall, between 7cm and 11cm, is also expected in at least some regions of the state on July 22 (Tuesday) and 23 (Wednesday) while similar conditions will persist over Lakshadweep today and tomorrow. Strong surface winds with speed reaching 40-50 kmph are likely to prevail occasionally over Kerala and Lakshadweep at least until Tuesday, the IMD warning added.

 

According to the National Oceanographic Research Centre (NORC), there is a possibility of high waves and sea erosion along the coasts of Thiruvananthapuram (from Kappil to Pozhiyur), Kollam (from Alappad to Edava), Alappuzha (from Chellanam to Azheekal) and Kannur-Kasargod (from Kunjathur to Kottakunnu) districts till 5.30 pm tomorrow. The warning also states that there is a possibility of sea erosion along the coast of Kanyakumari (from Neerodi to Arokyapuram) from 8.30 am to 3.30 pm tomorrow.
