Mumbai: BMC Launches Online Cremation & Burial Booking Platform; Service Live From Today

Mumbai: In a step towards modernising civic services and reducing logistical stress during bereavement, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) launched a new online platform, the Crematorium Management System, allowing citizens to book cremation or burial slots at BMC-run facilities. The system went live on Saturday, July 19 and will be accessible via the BMC’s official website under the 'Apply' section.

Developed using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology, the platform has been jointly implemented by the BMC’s Public Health and Information Technology departments. The system is designed to streamline and simplify funeral arrangements by offering real-time updates on slot availability and allowing users to reserve a cremation or burial site based on their location and religious customs.

How Does It Work?

According to a Hindustan Times report, the digital service enables users to search for available cremation or burial grounds within a five-kilometre radius or anywhere across Mumbai. Once a slot is booked, users will receive a unique registration number along with SMS confirmations and alerts for any changes or cancellations. If a booked slot is not used, it will automatically be released and made available to other citizens, helping optimise resource allocation.

Recognising that not all residents may have access to the internet, the BMC has confirmed that existing offline registration at cremation and burial sites will continue alongside the online system. This ensures that the service is inclusive and accessible to all sections of society.

The primary aim of the Crematorium Management System is to reduce confusion, waiting time, and miscommunication during an emotionally difficult period for families. By offering transparency and coordination between the public and crematorium staff, the BMC hopes to improve the overall efficiency of funeral services in the city.

Where To Make The Bookings?

Citizens can access the portal at (https://portal.mcgm.gov.in) to make bookings. The BMC has urged residents to make use of the new system, especially in emergencies, to avoid delays and ensure smooth operations at municipal crematoria and burial grounds.
