Rainfall Alert: Heavy rains expected in many states; Meteorological Department issues red alert
The India Meteorological Department has predicted drizzle or rain with thunderstorms in the national capital on Sunday. On Saturday, the city’s maximum temperature was recorded at 34.5 degrees Celsius, which is 0.9 degrees below the season’s average.
Monsoon has brought heavy rains in different parts of the country. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain warning in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal and Kerala. Torrential rains in some parts of Rajasthan have caused flood-like situation. Due to heavy rains in the last 24 hours, there are flood-like conditions in many cities including Ajmer, Pushkar, Bundi, Sawai Madhopur and Pali. Many villages have been cut off due to overflowing of rivers and dams due to heavy rains. Jaipur Meteorological Department Director Radheshyam Sharma said that there is a possibility of a rapid decline in rain activity across the state from Sunday. He said that a new wave of heavy rains could potentially return to eastern Rajasthan around July 27-28.
In Uttarakhand, the Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for heavy rain in parts of Kumaon region on Sunday. Nainital, Champawat and Udham Singh Nagar of Kumaon region are likely to receive heavy rain today. The department has issued an orange alert for heavy rain in Dehradun, Tehri and Pauri districts of Garhwal region as well as Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts of Kumaon. The district administration has been asked to take other precautionary measures including controlling the movement of people. There is an instruction to keep disaster related equipment and wireless sets ready at every police station and post. Tourists will not be allowed to travel in the upper areas of the Himalayas amid abnormal weather or heavy rain.
Orange alert in 9 districts of Himachal
In Himachal Pradesh, the IMD has issued an orange alert for heavy rain on Monday and Tuesday in 9 districts Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur. A total of 141 roads are still closed in the state, while 58 water supply schemes and 28 power distribution transformers have been affected till Saturday evening. 94 roads are closed in disaster-hit Mandi district, while 33 roads are closed in Kullu district. A yellow alert has also been issued for heavy rainfall at isolated places till Sunday. The weather department said that there will be heavy rains in Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur on Monday. There is also a possibility of thunderstorms and lightning in Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Sirmaur on Tuesday.
Heavy rains in Arunachal, Sikkim and Kerala
Normal life was affected due to heavy rains and landslides in some areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim. This also disrupted traffic. In Kerala, the IMD has issued a red alert for heavy rains in 5 northern districts (Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod), where continuous rains have flooded many cities and high altitude areas and disrupted traffic. Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur and Palakkad districts have been put under orange alert for heavy rainfall. In view of the rain warning, the KSDMA has also issued guidelines regarding precautions to be taken during emergencies. The District Magistrate in Kozhikode is closely monitoring the situation and is ready to evacuate people living in high altitude areas and near water bodies to safer places if required.
