Priya Malik, the stunning Rio Olympic medallist, shines in Budapest and takes home silver

Budapest : At the wrestling ranking tournament in Budapest, Hungary, Priya Malik made the country proud with her strong performance and well-earned silver medal. The young Indian grappler, a former U-20 world champion, stunned Rio 2016 Olympic bronze medallist Elmira Syzdykova of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinals with a resounding 7-2 victory.
In the semi-finals, Priya crushed Valeriia Trifonova 11-1, continuing her incredible run. She did, however, lose to Brazil’s Thamires Martins Machado 4-3 in a hotly contested final, settling for silver in a match that could have gone either way.
At the Budapest meet, the last ranking series competition prior to the World Wrestling Championships, India has won eight medals.
In the meantime, Manisha won a bronze medal for India while competing in the women’s 62kg division. Manisha recovered well in the rematch round after losing badly to Amina Tandelova 11-0 in the quarterfinals. After defeating French Olympian Ameline Douarre 8–2, she defeated Krystsina Sazykina 9–0 in the bronze medal match.
Indian wrestler Pushpa lost to World Championships bronze medallist Karla Godinez (Canada) and Cristelle Noelle Rodriguez (USA) in the 55kg Nordic division after fierce competition.
India had little success in the men’s Greco-Roman events; Ankit Gulia (72 kg) lost in the pre-quarterfinals, and Karan Kamboj (87 kg) was eliminated in the qualification round.
With eight medals so far from the Budapest competition—three gold, two silver, and three bronze—India has demonstrated a strong overall showing. India has demonstrated depth across disciplines with wrestlers competing in Greco-Roman, men’s, and women’s freestyle divisions.
The Polyak Imre & Varga Janos Memorial is more than just a competition; it’s the wrestlers’ last chance to earn ranking points for the year. These points are important because they will affect seedings for the September World Wrestling Championships in Zagreb, Croatia.
India’s wrestling team is still hoping for more podium finishes in the remaining matches as the Budapest tournament comes to an end on July 20.
