Mahadangal: Devotees Branded ‘Terrorists’? Controversy Erupts Over Kanwar Yatra Conduct | ABP NEWS

A charged debate erupted on ABP News as Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and spiritual leader Yogi Umesh Puri came out strongly in defense of the ongoing Kanwar Yatra, alleging a campaign to defame the sacred Hindu tradition. Yogi Adityanath claimed that Kanwariyas are being unfairly targeted, even branded as “terrorists” by certain sections of the media and political opposition. “This is an attack on India's spiritual heritage,” he said, drawing parallels with past events like the Kumbh Mela, where he alleged similar smear tactics were used. Yogi Umesh Puri, a prominent spiritual figure and staunch defender of Sanatan Dharma, added, “This is not just a pilgrimage, it is a spiritual movement. But anti-national forces are trying to infiltrate and dishonor it.” He echoed Yogi Adityanath’s concerns, suggesting political parties might be sending infiltrators disguised as devotees to provoke unrest and tarnish the Yatra’s image. The discussion intensified as Shahbaad Chauhan, representing the opposition, questioned the government’s excessive religious appeasement, citing examples of flower showers from helicopters and police serving Kanwariyas instead of focusing on law enforcement. Operation Kalnemi, which led to over 100 arrests in Uttarakhand, was welcomed by Chauhan but he demanded its extension to Uttar Pradesh. He also criticized the disruption caused by the Yatra — blocked roads, closed schools, and diverted emergency services — questioning if governance had taken a backseat to religious optics. The debate highlighted the growing intersection of religion and politics, raising critical concerns about the balance between faith, law, and state responsibility.
