IIM-Calcutta rape case: West Bengal court grants bail to accused student after victim skips summons to record statement

A Kolkata court granted bail to a student of the Indian Institute of Management-Calcutta accused of rape. The accused was reportedly granted bail, considering the victim is yet to record her statement.

 

The Alipore additional chief judicial magistrate court granted bail to the accused student on a bond of Rs 50,000. The court also told the student from Karnataka to deposit his passport and not to leave the state without its permission.

 

 

The accused IIM-Calcutta student was arrested on July 11 following a complaint from a woman clinical psychologist, who alleged she was raped by the student, in campus premises, when she visited the hostel for a counselling session. Haridevpur police arrested the accused on the victim's complaint on July 11. However, the victim's father had denied the charges and said she suffered injuries falling off from an autorickshaw. The victim alleged the accused spiked her drink and raped her.

 

The court had remanded the accused till July 19. The prosecution opposed the bail and said releasing him could jeopardise the probe. 

However, the court observed that the victim had failed to turn up for recording her statement during three instances. The accused lawyer said the accused should not be remanded as medico-legal test of the complainant had not been done. 

 

An IIM-Calcutta official told The Telegraph India the student would be allowed to attend classes if the court permits. “If the court permits campus entry, he can attend classes. We are ready to give him compensatory attendance for missed days," an official told the publication.
