Two Indians were killed while one was abducted following a terror attack in the Dosso region of Niger earlier this week, the Indian Embassy has said.

The attack took place on July 15 when some unidentified armed attackers ambushed a Nigerien army unit providing security at a construction site for an electrical line. Dosso is around 100 kilometres from the capital city of Niamey.

The Embassy said they were in touch with the local authorities to repatriate the mortal remains of those killed and ensure the safe release of the abducted.

"In a heinous terror attack on July 15 in Niger's Dosso region, two Indian nationals tragically lost their lives and one was abducted," it said in a social media post.

“Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. Mission in Niamey is in touch with local authorities to repatriate mortal remains and ensure the safe release of the abducted Indian. All Indians in Niger are advised to remain vigilant,” the post further said.

The man, who was abducted by terrorists during the attack, was identified as Ranjeet Singh, a resident of Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district.

Singh’s wife, Sheela Devi, on Saturday requested the intervention of the central government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure the safe release of her husband.

Singh was working as a senior safety officer at Transrail Lighting Limited, an integrated power transmission and distribution company.

Devi said she lost contact with her husband on July 15 and learned about his abduction the next day through his friend.

"We talked on WhatsApp on July 15, and since then, I have not been able to contact him. I called his management and was initially told that there is no network at the work site,” she was quoted by PTI news agency.

"It has been four days since then. I believe that there is no effort to secure my husband's release from his captors," she said.

The couple has three children.
