BJD to Highlight Rising Crimes Against Women in Odisha During Monsoon Session of Parliament

New Delhi: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has decided to highlight the deteriorating law and order situation in Odisha, particularly the surge in crimes against women, during the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament, starting July 21.

At an all-party meeting in New Delhi, BJD MP Dr. Sasmit Patra described the situation as a “complete collapse” of law and order under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

He emphasized the alarming rise in heinous crimes against women and girls, citing recent incidents to underline the issue.

Patra referenced the tragic self-immolation of a female student from FM (Autonomous) College in Balasore, who had sought help from a local BJP MP, the administration, the Chief Minister, and the Higher Education Minister, but received no support. “She was an active ABVP member, yet her pleas were ignored, leading to her tragic death,” he said.

The BJD MP also spoke about the alleged burning of a 15-year-old girl in Puri district and an assault on a senior Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation officer by five BJP local leaders, who were later arrested.

He also noted the stampede during the recent Puri Rath Yatra as another issue the BJD will raise, alongside other state-specific concerns.

“The Odisha BJP government is incompetent and has failed to control the collapsing law and order situation, marked by utter lawlessness and anarchy,” Patra stated.

He affirmed the BJD’s commitment to supporting the opposition in addressing these issues in Parliament.

The Monsoon Session will run from July 21 to August 21, with no sittings on August 13 and 14 due to Independence Day celebrations.
