In a shocking incident, a tribal youth died in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala's capital, after Congress workers refused to let an ambulance pass amidst a protest. Party members blocked the ambulance for about 20 minutes at the Vidura Taluk Hospital, which reportedly cost the patient his life, according to Malayalam media reports.
The victim was identified as Vinu, a Vidura native, who was being transported for advanced treatment to another hospital when protestors blocked the ambulance's path. The local Congress committee organised the protest against the poor condition of the Vidura hospital and its ambulances. The Congress workers refused to let the vehicle go, despite the ambulance driver and Vinu's relatives explaining that his condition was critical and he needed to be shifted to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College at the earliest, 24 News reported.
The ambulance was stopped before it could even leave the hospital premises, the TV reoprt said.
Following the protest, Congress leaders even shared photos of the protest online, claiming to have organised it at the hospital.
Public outcry over Congress protest
There is a public outcry against the incident, as social media users pointed out the irony of protesting against the terrible condition of the hospital by jeopardising a patient's chance to live. Many commented that stopping ambulances midway is not a civilised method of democratic protest.
Vinu was rushed to the Taluk hospital after attempting to take his own life over a personal matter.
Congress heads the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) alliance in Kerala. They are on war path against the Left government in the southern state, particularly hitting out against the health ministry in the recent months over various issues. The Kerala Legislative Assembly election is expected to be held before May 2026.
