Georges Abdallah to Be Released After 40 Years in French Prison

Paris/Beirut — Georges Ibrahim Abdallah, a Lebanese citizen who has been a political prisoner for more than 40 years, will be free from French imprisonment on July 25, 2025. The Paris Court of Appeal delivered its verdict on Thursday, closing a decades-long legal and political saga that has captured global attention.
Abdallah, who is now 74, has been in prison since 1984 for his part in the 1982 murders of U.S. and Israeli diplomats in France. Authorities held the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions (LARF), a Marxist group supporting the Palestinian cause, responsible for the murders. Since 1999, he has been able to get out on parole, but French officials have always stopped him from doing so, allegedly because of diplomatic pressure from the US and Israel.
Abdallah is a committed communist and pro-Palestinian activist who has remained a divisive figure. Some see him as a terrorist, while others see him as a symbol of powerful resistance to Western imperialism and Zionism. For decades, supporters around the world have organized protests, filed legal appeals, and built global solidarity movements to push for his release.
Protest to free Georges Abdallah
His release is coming at a time when tensions are rising in the Middle East and fighting is still going on in Gaza, where more than 10,000 Palestinians are still in jail, many of them without trial. Human rights groups are worried about the conditions in Israeli prisons since there have been complaints of violence, solitary confinement, and lack of medical care.
Abdallah’s story has long been a symbol of the larger fights over political imprisonment and freedom for all. Supporters respect his refusal to apologize or ask for a pardon as a sign of his political beliefs. A representative for the Free Georges Abdallah Collective said, “Georges Abdallah never gave in, even after 40 years in prison.” “His release is not just for him; it is a victory for all revolutionary prisoners and oppressed people.”
The Lebanese government has said before that they would be happy to welcome Abdallah back when he is released. The Lebanese government previously expressed its willingness to welcome Abdallah upon his release. According to reports, officials are currently coordinating his return to Beirut, where his family, friends, and political allies plan to receive him.
Many of his followers are happy with the court’s ruling, but they have made it clear that their fight is not over. “Our thoughts are with the thousands of Palestinian prisoners and revolutionary detainees around the world who are still suffering in prison,” said a statement from his support network. “Georges Abdallah’s release is a time for joy, but it’s also a call to action again.”
Georges Abdallah is now at Lannemezan Prison in the southwest of France. His release on July 25 will end one of the longest times in European history that someone has been in jail for political reasons.
