Kerala announces holiday tomorrow to mourn the death of former chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan

The protocol department of the Kerala government issued a circular announcing a holiday in the state on Tuesday, July 22. This is to mourn the death of former chief minister V.S. Achuthanandan.

The circular said that the holiday will apply to “all state government offices, all educational institutions including professional colleges, public sector undertakings, statutory bodies, autonomous institutions, and institutions covered under the Negotiable Instruments Act throughout the State”.
Additionally, the state will observe a period of mourning for three days, until July 24. During this period, the national flag on all government buildings shall be flown at half-mast throughout the state.

Achuthanandan will be cremated with full state honours in his hometown of Alappuzha on July 23, Wednesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday condoled the death of Achuthanandan. "Saddened by the passing of former Kerala CM Shri VS Achuthanandan Ji. He devoted many years of his life to public service and Kerala's progress. I recall our interactions when we both served as Chief Ministers of our respective states. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this sad hour."
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin paid tribute to the former Kerala CM, saying, "Comrade V S Achuthanandan leaves behind a revolutionary legacy deeply etched in Kerala's political conscience."
