Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President on the first day of the Parliament session, know the reason
The 14th Vice President of the country, Jagdeep Dhankhar, resigned from his post on the night of 21 July. He cited health reasons as the reason for this. 74-year-old Dhankhar’s tenure was till August 10, 2027. He said in a program on July 10, ‘If God blesses, I will retire in August 2027.’
Dhankhar submitted his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu under Article 67 (A). Wrote – Keeping health as a priority and following medical advice, I am resigning from the post of Vice President of India with immediate effect.
In the letter, he thanked the President for his cooperation and cordial relations. He also thanked the Prime Minister and the Cabinet for their cooperation. However, his resignation will take effect only after the President’s approval.
Dhankhar took oath as Vice President on 11 August 2022. He defeated opposition candidate Margaret Alva in the Vice Presidential election. Dhankhar got 528 votes out of a total of 725, while Alva got 182 votes.
The monsoon session of Parliament is currently underway. The Vice President is the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Dhankhar is the first Vice President of the country to resign from the post in the middle of the session. He is also the third Vice President to resign in the middle of his tenure.

JDU MP Harivansh from Bihar in the race for the next Vice President
After Dhankhar’s resignation, speculations about his successor have also started. In such a situation, JDU MP Harivansh from Bihar is also being seen among the potential candidates. He has been holding the post of Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha since 2020. However, his term is also ending this month.
If the resignation of the Vice President is accepted, then the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha will be the Chairman (under Article 91) till the new Vice President is elected, but he will not get the charge of Vice President. Because there is no provision for Acting Vice President in the Constitution.
In the absence of the President, his charge is given to the Vice President. If the post of Vice President is vacant and the President is also absent i.e. out of the country, then in such a situation the charge of the President is given to the CJI. The time limit for how many days the Vice President should be elected when the post is vacant is not fixed.
Dhankhar had chest pain after the program last month
On June 25, Jagdeep Dhankhar’s health suddenly deteriorated after a program in Uttarakhand. He was immediately taken to Nainital Raj Bhavan, where the doctor checked him. Dhankhar had arrived as the chief guest at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Kumaon University in Nainital.
After the program was over, Dhankhar came out with his hand on the shoulder of former MP Mahendra Singh Pal. Then he hugged Mahendra Pal and started crying. After walking about 10 steps, Dhankhar suddenly felt pain in his chest. Former MP Mahendra Pal and security personnel took care of him.
Earlier, Jagdeep Dhankhar was admitted to AIIMS Delhi on 9 March 2025 with a complaint of sudden chest pain. He was discharged from the hospital on 12 March 2025.
Jairam said- PM should ask Jagdeep Dhankhar to change his mind
The opposition is questioning Jagdish Dhankhar’s sudden resignation from the post of Vice President. Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said in a post- There is more to this unexpected resignation than what is visible. PM Modi should persuade Dhankhar to change his mind. This will be in the national interest. Especially the farming community will get a lot of relief.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anand Dubey said- The news of the Vice President’s resignation due to health reasons is worrying. We wish him well. It was the first day of the monsoon session and his resignation on the same day is surprising. What is going on in this government? If health was a matter of concern, the resignation could have been given a few days before or after the session.
