A cryptic reminder? Jagdheep Dhankhar 'got many opportunities', says PM Narendra Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar good health as he resigned from the post on Monday, stunning the political class.

 

 

"Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health," Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted after the Union home ministry notified the Parliament about his resignation. 

 

 

In a sudden move, Jagdeep Dhankhar announced his resignation from the vice president's post on Monday. In his resignation letter to the president, Dhankhar cited health reasons for his sudden departure from office. 

 

"To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution," Dhankhar said in a resignation letter to President Droupadi Murmu. 

 

"It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India's remarkable economic progress and transformational era of our nation's history has been true honour, serving as vice president. As I leave extended office, I filled with pride in Bharat's bold and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future," he added. Dhankhar, 74, assumed office in August 2022.

 

The Union home ministry notified the Parliament about Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar's resignation, with immediate effect on Tuesday. Soon after the House met for the Question Hour at 12 noon, Ghanshyam Tiwari, who was in the Chair, informed members about the notification.

 

"The Ministry of Home Affairs, vide notification dated July 22, 2025, has conveyed the resignation of Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar under Article 67 (A) of the Constitution with immediate effect," Tiwari announced.

 

 Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Harivansh Narayan Singh told the upper house that further constitutional process concerning vacancy in the office of vice president of India will be communicated as and when received.
