‘Chhangur Baba threatened to kill my two daughters if I didn’t convert to Islam’
Jamaluddin alias Chhangur Baba
Trouble mounts for Jamaluddin alias Chhangur Baba, who was arrested earlier this month for allegedly running a religious conversion racket, with more people turning up to file complaints against him.
Jyotirgmay Rai (35), a resident of Bhadohi in Uttar Pradesh, claimed that the self-styled godman threatened to murder his two daughters in an attempt to force him to convert to Islam.
Rai has filed a complaint to Additional Director General of Police, Piyush Mordia.
The man claimed that he married a woman named Ishita through an Arya Samaj ceremony, but later discovered that she was from a Muslim family and her real name was Afreen. The couple have two daughters.
The complainant alleged that after the birth of their second daughter in 2024, Afreen's family began pressuring him to convert to Islam.
"Rai claims that Afreen left with their daughters for Lucknow in November 2024. When he followed them, he was allegedly threatened and subjected to brainwashing by Chhangur Baba. He has also claimed that he was asked to convert to Islam while his daughters were held at knifepoint," Superintendent of Police Abhimanyu Mangalik told reporters.
Rai returned to Bhadohi without converting and filed a petition before the high court seeking custody of his children. Meanwhile, police have also launched an investigation into his allegations.
According to officials, Chhangur Baba, a resident of Balrampur, is accused of targeting people from several communities and even maintaining a rate list for conversions, officials said.
The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad claimed that Baba financed over 1,000 Muslim men to lure Hindu girls under the guise of 'love jihad' and convert them. He is also accused of receiving over ₹500 crore through around 40 bank accounts from foreign sources.
Police have also arrested his son Mehboob, and associates Naveen Rohra and Neetu alias Nasreen.
