Elon Musk Announces Big Tesla Update For India, Nationwide Pre-Orders Now Begin

Tesla has taken a significant step towards its India entry, allowing customers in several Indian states to order its vehicles directly through its official website. The company's CEO Elon Musk made this significant announcement through a post on his social media site X. This marks a new phase in Tesla’s expansion, as it prepares to cater to the growing demand for premium electric vehicles in the country.

The company has enabled online bookings across many regions including Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Haryana, Kerala, Punjab, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chathattisgarh, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and KAshmir, Jharkhand, Kerala, Ladakh, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Puducherry, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkin, Tripura, Uttarakhand, and West Bengal.

Buyers in these states can now access Tesla’s digital configurator to explore available models, customize their cars, and place an order.

While orders are open widely, Tesla will prioritize deliveries to key metro cities—specifically Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and Gurugram. These cities are expected to be the first to experience Tesla ownership in India, likely due to better infrastructure and readiness for electric vehicle adoption.

The announcement was shared by Elon Musk via social media, signalling Tesla’s commitment to the Indian market, though the company has yet to announce an official delivery timeline.

More details regarding service centers, charging infrastructure, and model availability are expected in the coming months. This update comes after years of speculation and multiple rounds of discussions between Tesla and Indian authorities regarding local manufacturing and import duties. With bookings now open, Indian customers have their first concrete opportunity to own a Tesla directly from the company.

Only the Model Y is currently up for pre-orders, and it starts from Rs. 59.89 lakhs. The high price tag is due to the heavy taxes imposed by the Indian government of fully assembled luxury cars.
