Delhi-NCR chokes in heavy rain: Intense morning showers cause waterlogging, massive traffic jams hit commuters, IMD issues red alert for…
Heavy rain caused big problems in Delhi on Wednesday morning. Many roads were flooded, and traffic jams made it hard for people to reach their offices on time. The weather department has also warned that more rain is likely, and has issued red and orange alerts for the coming hours. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Safdarjung, which is the main weather station in Delhi, recorded 5.6 mm of rain between 5:30 am and 8:30 am. Other parts of the city got more rain i.e. Pragati Maidan had 16.6 mm, Pusa got 10 mm, Janakpuri had 9.5 mm, and Najafgarh got 2 mm.
Waterlogging and traffic chaos
Many parts of the city were affected by waterlogging and slow-moving traffic. These included South Delhi, South East Delhi, North Delhi, ITO, South Extension, NH-8, Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, Nehru Place, East of Kailash, Colony Road, and several other busy areas.
North West and South West Delhi are on orange alert, which means people should stay prepared. Meanwhile, areas like South Delhi and North East Delhi are under a red alert, which is more serious and means people need to be very careful and ready to act quickly.
While heavy rain lashed the area near Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, authorities confirmed that flight operations remained unaffected.
Officials have asked people to stay inside as much as possible and avoid going out unless necessary. They also advised staying away from electric poles, wires, and not taking shelter under trees during the rain. It’s also important to follow traffic updates to stay safe.
Delhi weather today, IMD prediction
The rain brought some relief from the humid weather. The temperature also dropped, the lowest temperature in the city was 25.6 degrees celsius, which is 1.7 degrees lower than normal. The highest temperature is expected to be around 33 degrees celsius, as per the weather department.
Meanwhile, the IMD has warned of continued rainfall over the coming days. The forecast predicts generally cloudy skies with very light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning for the next seven days.
Yamuna river being closely watched
Delhi’s troubles may grow as water levels in the Yamuna could rise soon. The Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana has released over 50,000 cusecs of water, the highest flow seen this monsoon. Officials are now keeping a close eye on the river, worried that flooding may get worse in the coming days.
The weather department has also said that light to moderate rain is expected in nearby states like Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Wind speeds could reach 30 to 40 km/h during these showers, which might cause trees to fall or small damage in some city areas.
