Bid to smuggle heroin into Faridkot jail: Mother, wife of inmate arrested

The mother and wife of a man lodged in Faridkot Central Jail were arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle heroin hidden in clothes meant for the prisoner.

According to jail officials, Charanjit Kaur, mother of inmate Harpreet Singh, and Veerpal Kaur, his wife — both residents of Bilaspur, Moga — arrived at the Faridkot Central Jail to meet him and deliver some clothes. Harpreet was temporarily lodged in Moga and had been brought to Faridkot for a court appearance.

As per the standard operating procedure, the clothes brought by the women were subjected to scanning and manual inspection. During the search, prison staff found 35 grams of heroin concealed in the clothes.

The suspicious material was immediately seized and the matter reported to the authorities concerned. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and other Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered under  Sections 21(B)/61/85 of the NDPS Act.

The accused women were taken into custody, and further investigation is under way to ascertain the origin of the contraband and whether other individuals were involved in the smuggling attempt.

The search and seizure operation was led by Karamjit Singh Bhullar, Assistant Superintendent, Faridkot Central Jail.
