'Wednesday' returns: Season 3 greenlit by Netflix ahead of season 2 release, spin-off in the works

Today is a special Wednesday for 'Wednesday' fans worldwide, as Netflix has renewed season three of one of India's most-watched English shows, ahead of the release of a second season.

The Jenna Ortega-starrer is also set to be made into a spin-off series, the details of which remain under wraps, a THR report said.

The much-awaited second season of the supernatural comedy series created by Tim Burton—famed for the 'Beetlejuice' films and Johnny Depp-starrer 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'—will premiere on August 6.

This follows the success of the first season, which became the most-watched original series ever on Netflix, with more than 250 million views, and received a whopping 12 Emmy nominations.

According to Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria, the show became so successful that “people watched it again and again and brought their parents into it, and it became a multigenerational show”. “There were soldiers in Ukraine doing the Wednesday dance”, she added.

'Wednesday' stars Ortega as the reimagined titular teenager from the Addams Family, who is expelled from her school and sent to the Nevermore Academy for outsiders. Ortega, a long-time horror actress in films like 'Scream VI', 'X' and 'Insidious: Chapter 2', shot to fame with this series, going on to star in Burton's 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice', released this year.

The show's ensemble cast also features Gwendoline Christie, Emma Myers and Riki Lindhome. Myers went on to bag a leading role in the BBC-Netflix show 'A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder'.

The trailer for the second season, released earlier this month, showed Wednesday return to Nevermore to navigate another year of mystery, mayhem and secrets. “Secrets are the bedrock of the Addams family. The sooner I get answers, the sooner I can save Enid—or die trying,” she says, in the trailer.

The second season will be released in two parts: the first four episodes will be released on August 6 this year, while the last four episodes come out on September 3.
