Video: Plane crashes on Italian highway; pilot, 75, among 2 dead
A tragic plane crash on a highway in northern Italy has left two people dead and two others injured. The incident occurred near Brescia on Tuesday, when a small ultralight aircraft crashed onto the road and burst into flames.
The victims have been identified as 75-year-old Sergio Ravaglia, a lawyer and experienced pilot from Milan, and his 60-year-old partner, Ann Maria De Stefano. Authorities say Ravaglia may have been attempting an emergency landing when the aircraft suddenly nosedived and slammed into the highway.
The aircraft, a Freccia RG ultralight made of carbon fiber with a wingspan of about 30 feet, exploded upon impact, sending thick black smoke into the air.
Dramatic video footage captured the plane descending at high speed just moments before the crash.
Two motorists sustained injuries in the aftermath of the explosion but survived. Several vehicles were seen swerving to avoid the burning wreckage, which was fully engulfed by fire when emergency crews arrived on the scene.
