Heavy Rain Wreaks Havoc In Kerala; IMD Issues Orange, Yellow Alerts

Kerala continues to reel under heavy rainfall since Friday night, causing widespread damage across multiple districts and pushing river and dam water levels higher. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued an orange alert for seven districts, warning of very heavy downpours.

In Thiruvananthapuram, IMD said, the city and its surrounding areas will see a generally cloudy sky with intermittent rain or thundershowers through Saturday.

Orange & Yellow Alerts In Kerala

The orange alert — indicating rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm in 24 hours — was issued for a three-hour window on Saturday morning in the districts of Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram and Kozhikode. Additionally, the IMD has issued yellow warnings (7–11 cm rainfall) for the following days:

  • July 27 (Day 3): Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
  • July 28 (Day 4): Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
  • July 29 (Day 5): Kannur and Kasaragod.

Monsoon Active In Kerala; Heavy Rainfall In Munnar

The southwest monsoon remains active over Kerala, with most regions witnessing continuous rain. Munnar in Idukki district recorded 11 cm of rain in the past 24 hours.

The prevailing weather conditions have been worsened by a depression that formed over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal regions of West Bengal and Bangladesh. Initially observed as a well-marked low-pressure area, it intensified and moved west-northwestward at 13 km/h, crossing into Gangetic West Bengal. The system is expected to move further across North Odisha and Jharkhand in the next 24 hours.

The IMD also reported the offshore trough along the Maharashtra–Kerala coast remains active, contributing to the persistent rain.

From July 25 to 27, strong surface winds reaching speeds of 50–60 km/h are expected over Kerala and Lakshadweep, tapering slightly to 40–50 km/h on July 28 and 29.
